What Circle Hooks Do You Trust?

Do you have Hook Brand loyalty? Do you have one or two trusted brands that you stick with when you know you are going to be fishing for big fish? Check it out, for the longest time I used to use only Gamakatsu circle hooks, yeah they were a little expensive but to me they were worth, and then sometime a few months ago I started having problems.

FULL DISCLOSURE - I do alot of Tarpon Fishing, and push all the tackle including the rod, and reel, and the line, leader and hooks beyond its rated class size. I understand that I am asking alot to catch 60lb fish on gear that is rated and tested in the 12lb class. With that being said, I still never had a problem with Gamakatsu hooks until a few months ago when I started bending hooks. I bought a few more packs of the Gamakatsu hooks hoping that I had just gotten a bad batch, but the hook bending continued, so I had to switch it up. Labor Day Mullet Report Video

Ok, well Labor Day completely ruins any fishing you thought you were gonna do from the beach because of the crowds. Weather got really Nasty looking to the north so we weren't about to take the boat out, again factor in Labor Day. At least the bait was out a few hundred yards in the deeper water. There is no way you could get out far enough to throw a castnet, and even if you did you would probably get attacked by sharks before you made it back to shore.

Hurricane Irene pushed some bait down and the fishing turned on like I haven't seen in a very long time. Respected reports were coming in from mall the usual sources and it seemed like everyone was catching fish. The bait is all mixed together, pilchard, mullet, sardine, and even goggle-eye.

The steering system failed so we decided to have some fun with the resident Marina fish. I know its cherry picking but it was all in good fun while we waited for the repair crew to show up. Beach fishing improved at the end of the week. Pilchard were thick for miles, and you didn't need a cast net to get em. Just a simple Sabiki Rig. Ok, so bait is easy to get, but the Snooks were still being stubborn. Its the old rule, if you can see the snooks, they can see you. So you can try stuff like wearing blue shirts and try to keep your shadow off of the fish. Drew was able to have some limited success. Let us know how you are doing out there.

By now all the good bait, and by that I mean mullet and pilchard have left the beach and gone inshore to the inlets and dead end canals. You can do one of two things, you can either get your plugs out and get em caught in the trees, or you can hunker down and fish with real bait. Listen it aint that hard, you just gotta be persistent. Long gone are the days of huge net hauls off the beach where you get a few hundred select baits in one chunk. Now you gotta get low, you gotta pick off singles if you can find them. Fort Lauderdale - Well we finally got a cold front, it took until the first week of November, but I'll take it. This cold front will push the remaining pod south, and it will be here fast. Don't sleep onit, its gonna be over in a blink of an eye. Thats the good news, the bad news is the inshore fishing will turn of during this blast so don't even waste your hoglegs on Tarpon or Snook. I'm gonna fish offshore, and I'm taking my mullet with me. Never mind those losers at the gas dock that swear you gotta fish with Goggs. Thats right I bring my mullet offshore. Thats all I'm saying. Fort Lauderdale - Bait is tough out there right now. Well not really, but I'm still seeing alot of anglers struggling out there to catch bait. There seems to be a bit of confusion out there so lets clear things up first. Happy Bait is over. What does this mean? It means that you have to do more than just take a 4ft net to the beach and blind toss it into the shore break. Those days are over. Now we are passed Happy Bait you won't see as many Googs down there as were around in late September and early October when the Mullet Run was the most obvious thing on the beach. Most of those guys you saw down there will have chunked their gear back into the garage for another year. Which is fine by me. Cause there is still bait out there. We are gonna continue to break news on the Mullet Run Twitter and best believe that we are gonna be catching fish.

This video is from about 8 years ago. Its Captain Jeff and Fresh Water Rob and a decent river Tarpon in downtown Fort Lauderdale. I think Chard week combined with getting Blowed out by the back to back storms might have dampened some spirits, but come on peoplethere is bait everywhere. And I do mean everywhere. Its on the beach, in the canals, and in all the old places, but I'm still seeing guys on the bow of the boat, net cocked at 9 oclock at night. Whats up with that? Here is a tip if its after dark, and you still dont have any bait. Throw your net at the BAIT SPOTS! Throw it at the ramps or at the back of the dead end canals. DONT be throwing your net on the fishing spots. Especially when people are trying to fish. And if you are still struggling to get bait, just ask somebody for a few baits. You dont need to be throwing the net 25 times and going over and back over the fish with a 2 stroke. Got it? Good, now get bait.

Looks like I didn't miss much as far as the pod is concerned. I will tell you this, there was pod all over South Beach from 5th St to the Inlet, and there wasnt a serious Happy Baiter on them. Sure there were the usual locals casting chunk squid with the clicker still on, and I did see one hard core guy flipping pilchards around the jetty but thats it.

Fort Lauderdale - The wind was blowing 20 - 30 and the waves were crashing on the beach and breaching A1A. Too flippin' bad, because there were multiple pods traveling down the beach just beyond the breakers. You could see the fish hitting the schools but there was no way to get to the bait or to fish the pods. Good luck out there.

Chard Week - Pilchards Crowd Out Pod

Fort Lauderdale - Well the wind finally laid down and the blowed out conditions gave us a break, but wouldnt you know it. Stinking pilchards have blacked out the water for as far as the I can see. Pelicans diving everywhere, and trust me they were everywhere. The mullet was pushed out and was kind of riding high and dry in the middle of the inlet. The sad part was I didn't see a single fish eat the entire time we were down there at the beach. Some happy baiter kept saying something in my ear about Hog Snapper but I was too busy looking for real bait to listen to some two stroking tee-topping pilchard flippin' doofus talk about Hog Snapper spots. Fort Lauderdale - The bait is here folks, just that we have been too blowed out to fish the run fromthe beach or from boat. It didn't stop us though we got out there and got skunked. We jumped a few tarpon at the Jetty and Brian did manage to pull a decent Snook out of the inside cove of the inlet. Here is some reference video to show you what kind of bait is making it through, and what kind of conditions we were trying to fish through. Fort Lauderdale - Well its about time some real bait showed up! I guess this string of storm swirling around finally pushed some of the decent mullet down south. And of course we were on top of them. Now before you run out and drop a hundred bucks on a new Salty Dog Net and a Spin Combo you better understand that this is advanced fishing. The mullet are swimming fast down the beach, and unlike the rest of the happy bait that swam down before these hoglegs, they arent right up on the beach. So it will take some pretty good netting skills to fill your five gallon bucket. Just a glance down the beach showed tons of Happy Baiters still throwing plugs. Anyway, these Hogleg mullet brought big tarpon and big jacks with them. The mullet school were getting blasted every few seconds. The Tarpon have to be gorging themselves. And can you blame them after a month of these stinking fingermullet. In conclusion, Happy Bait and be safe out there.

Happy Bait Fun Fishing for Jacks and Tarpon

Fort Lauderdale- The word is out. The finger mullet are in town and you can tell that because you can see all the Happy Baiters on the beaches and bridges with their cast nets. Late afternoon you can spot fisherman staking their spots along the shore, and its that time of the year when people can a decent Jack from shore. So yesterday afternoon, I went out for a spot hopping session with Captain Jeff and Website Mike and a bait well filled with a few hundred finger mullet just to see what we could get into. It didn't take but a few flips to get into the jacks and a cudas, but we just weren't seeing any tarpon around. In fact the tarpon didn't turn on until the sun went down. Thats a tip right there. As usual the video is edited in a confusing manor as to not give up the spots.

Fort Lauderdale - We all know those guys, or at least we run into them down at the beach or your favorite fishing spot, that insist they actually like throwing plugs better than fishing with live bait. And we all think the same thing, "Dude can't get bait" am I right what. We have all run into that dude. He's all geared up, he's got the custom fishing rod, the expensive reel, the Costa Del Mar sunglasses, and the Crocs. Then you notice he's throwing a plug when there are a gazillion live bait swimming right under his nose. Ive never understood that way of thinking, why fish with a plug when you could be fishing with live bait. Well maybe some people aren't as committed to getting baait as others, and they are content to fishing with plugs and not catching anything while the next guy is willing to do whatever it takes to get bait.

Fort Lauderdale Beach - The bait was thick everywhere and it was pushed right up inshore if you know of the right sandbars. Late afternoon and we didn't have the best tide. It stormed for about 30 minutes. It was good seeing Bradley down there at Happy Bait, he was fired up to catch some lunkers like he did last happy bait. Snooks were not biting. Snook On The Beach

Reports keep coming in from beaches as far north as the Boca Inlet all the way down to South Beach. Captain Dave McKenzie of FishNorthBay.com updated his facebook that he was catching multiple snook down on Hollywood beach, and Captain Jeff continues to find Snook off the beach in Fort Lauderdale. Its pilchard bait, so dont worry if you can't throw a net, you can fill a 5 gallon bucket catching them with Sabiki rigs.

Its all about the tide. The old timers like to say that its a low tide thing, but there are others that will tell you different. Get down there, get some bait, and run that dog.

PARTS UNKNOWN - Got a headsup in the afternoon from Mike Grimm over at ReelReports.com that the snook were staccking up thick. Mike and his boy Payam crushed them in the earlier part of the day. We loaded up the buckets and headed on over. The first half of the session was Blowed-Out from an afternoon thunderstorm but when the wind stopped the snook turned on. All in all we must have landed at least 20 smell snook, fishing with 8lb gear. I will give you one quick tip - Use Small Hooks. Roll that highlight!

INSHORE - Mullet are pretty slim in the canals and estuaries, but if you really work at it you can find some choice baits. We eventually scrambled up enough baits to fish the afternoon session off the beach in the skiff, but we didn't even see a single fish. Weird because we saw Tarpon from the beach all week long. Blame it on the full moon and the incoming tide, yeah that was it.

Mullet Session: Up The River

NEW RIVER - Quick afternoon session up the New River with Capt. Dave MacKenzie of Fishnorthbay.com to chunk and drag hoglegs around sunset. The action was pretty slim around all the usual spots but we did manage to squeeze out a few little jumps. Boat traffic was slim, and other than a few kids tossing plug around we were left alone and didn't have any spot creepers to deal with. We will be getting out there again this week, as we are deep into production shooting some new episodes for the Youtube account. We went down to fish Miami Beach's Government Cut, but first we had to catch bait in Broward. Hey, thats how it works. It was really easy and took no longer than 10 minutes to get a dozen decent mullet by truck. Yeah, if you are serious about fishing and bait, you might want to get a battery powered bubbler and a 35 gallon well in the back of your truck. The bait held like champs for the 45+ minute drive down to South Beach. And bringing bait sure paid off, we fished the sunset and jumped several medium sized Tarpon and got a good hook into a 75lber. Dont hate the angler, hate the bait.

EVERYWHERE - We all know who they are, the Spot Kreepers. The first thing they ask you is "where did you catch it?" Its not good enough to give them a general location, they want the exact GPS Point. And why do they want that specific location? Because they want to fish that particular spot right now! Without you. If you make the mistake of giving up this prized information do not surprised the next time you go to that spot, you see them already fishing there. Its a tough choice to make. What information can you afford to give out to a friend, or a stranger when it comes to giving away your spots. Here are a few quick tips on how to deal with the uncomfortable moment that you are asked to share your spots.

Lie. Plain and simple. Just make something up.
Keep it general and fudge the time and tide information
Just say NO SPOT STEALING
Hide your backgrounds in photos and videos.
Play ignorant and just confuse all the details.

Netting Mullet after The Run

The 2009 Fall Mullet Run is in our rear view mirrors, but that doesn't mean its over. The good news is there are still mullet to be had if you know how to toss a net and have the eye to see em down deep in the colder water. The weather is all over the place, you may get a cold front for a night or two, and then back to 80 plus degrees for the rest of the week. Its simple, when its blowing cold, you break out the sailfish gear. When it warms up, head back to those inlets to whack a tarpon or two.

Well we all waited with great anticipation. Checking our spots over and over just praying for the run to start to gaining momentum. No momentum no consistancy and many fake outs. I really can not complain though, the fishing was good and almost of all my clients went home happy. Only a few clients actually got to see "Happy Bait". Just after our one and only cold front the bait started to scream by Fort Lauderdale. From my estimates 80% of the bait including all sizes and all species moved by our coast during the four day period after that last cold front. Most every body pretty much gave up on Happy Bait except for a few diehards. Happy bait was a little tough this year but I hope you guys found a little "Happy Bait" to get you by until next year.

We have Sailfish and Tarpon to look forward to this winter so good luck out there!

Jonathan Mathews sent over certified report out of Palm Beach last night that the mullet were thick in the inlet. These were not just finger mullet, true hog legs getting blasted by big fish.

White Holes

The mullet still are very thin. Although the fishing has been good tonight landed five tarpon and a nice snook but the bait totally blows. Ya you can muster up enough fingers to go fishing but no " Happy Bait". At this point we just got to hang in there and hope October is epic.

When you do see the real schools of bait look for the white holes. These holes are created by big eating fish. If you do not see these white hole an you are not getting any strikes move on until you find the white holes!

When the Mullet Run Is Really Here.

The transition from Pre-Pod to the true mullet run or (Happy Bait) is extremely dramatic.

Right now during this pre-pod period you will see some mullet and plenty of white bait. Each day is a new story sometimes the fish are there sometimes they are nowhere to be found. Although the fishing can be good during the pre-pod period, the big fish and multiple species will move in during a true "Happy Bait time". You will see big schools of bait as large as a football field or two.

Everyone will have bait if they so choose and every one will be stoked and happy.

Big fish will be in the surf for everyone to see not just someone with a trained eye. Tarpon, Sharks, Jack, Bluefish , mackeral, Lady fish will be showing themselves repeatedly. Most of all when you get home from fishing you will feel a high that only the mullet run can deliver.

If you see it you will know!

Happy Bait? More Like Happy Wait!

Fort Lauderdale - Rumors, exaggerations, and out right lies! The iPhone is buzzing, calls are coming in tweets are flying around and everybody is scrambling for parking down on the beach. But lo and behold, there is still no bait. Ok, thats a lie, there are some fragmented pods of pre-pod white bait dotting the shorelines, but that aint Happy Bait. Everybody just calm down and take a deep breath. The bait isn't here yet. Sure some guy heard from another guy, that a guy somebody knows saw pelicans diving on a pod around lunch time out infront of Beach Place, next thing you know, the beach is swarming with Happy Baiters nets cocked and buckets in tow. All I have to say is, what plug are you gonna throw? Why the long face? Seriously though, when the bait is here, you will know for sure because the tweets will go out WITHOUT the word "rumor" in the text, and there will be pictures, and it will be undeniable. Who you gonna trust?

Finger Mullet Finally Start To Show

Finger Mullet finally showed themselves today on Fort lauderdale beach this morning.

We also received some report of finger mullet in the ICW today. This is the start but its not a sure thing. After hearing the reports we went down to the beach to see what we could find. no birds and no bait. I am sure it will fill in each day so here we go!

Yeah tell me about it. We are all looking for bait, and there is still some pre-pod white bait out there for fun fishing, but its nowhere near as easy to net as it was last week. These birds are doing more looking and flying than diving, and it just confirms the reality that the real bait run is late, and we all know it. Come On!!!!

Snook Before the Mullet Run

Still no real sign of the mullet. Its gotta be any day now I can feel it!

When the mullet are late like this it drive s me crazy. In 1999 and 2005 those bastards did not show till the third week in September but the snook and tarpon did. Looks like it might pan out that way this year. My trips this week have been great, we landed nine tarpon and I do not know how may snooks.

Happy Bait Update! Pre-pod Snook Action

Fort Lauderdale - The Pre-pod white came in strong on the heels of that front and it lasted for a couple days and thinned right back out again. Steve from Atlantic Bait and Tackle got his keeper Snook and we were all real proud of him. Now that the pre-pod has fallen off we are back to waiting for the real bait to start showing up. Reports are sketchy, rumors of bait up around the Juno - Jupiter area are coming in hourly, all we can do is wait and try to dig up some 5 gallon buckets.

NOTE: If you are gonna go podding and plan on begging for bait which is fine, at least show up with your own bucket so you aren't fishing right next to the guy that is giving you bait. Its called civility.

Tougher Today Ready for Tomorrow

We fished off the beach again in Fort Lauderdale today. Fishing was much tougher than the last few days. Bait was thin but we managed to get by with few small pilchards. My buddy Brad who is just recovering from a major operation got out for the first time in over 3 months. He nabbed a nice 31 inch keeper and was pretty excited just to get out there.

Tomorrow we are traveling to our first destination to film " Happy Bait " Jupiter Florida. This is one of the hottest inlets for snook in the entire state. The other destinations will include PORT EVERGLADES, GOVERNMENT CUT , AND FLAMINGO. We are pretty fired up to be fishing Jupiter tomorrow and will post the outcome right here on the Mulletrun Blog.

More Happy Bait

Fort Lauderdale - The ocean today was totally different than it was yesterday, and so was the bait. There were mild strains of Happy Bait up and down the beach from Oakland Park Blvd. as far south as Las Olas. The birds were alot harder to find, and therefore so was the bait. It's still Happy Bait, but no mullet. Its pilchard, cigar minnow, and sardine. But you know if anybody got bait today, we got bait. We sent out the Tweet this afternoon, and one fellow tweeter actually showed up! Grimm got our tweet about the bait and drove all the way from Davie, and ended up getting 3 snook, and a tarpon.

We couldn't find the slot today, which shows just how pathetic the limits are, when you can't even get a fish in the slot even when you are fishing with chump baits like pilchard and sardine. Forget getting keepers on mullet, which is pretty much what the whole game is about anyway, but lets save that rant for another post. Anyway, it was sight casting time today. If you had a decent pair of polarized glasses you could see the snooks, swimming solo, in pairs and in threes, right off the beach. The biggest challenge was getting your baits infront of them without a Bait Hawk picking off the sorry white bait.

This Snook was over slot, and released all fine and dandy for those of you that worry at night about how fish are handled and released.

Happy Baiters On Fort Lauderdale Beach today

Lamont and I went out podding today. We saw massive schools of sardines and pilchards pushing up on the beach as the tide rose. We called a few friends and by 5:30 Drew, Steve, Joe, and I where knee deep in "Happy Bait". Steve and Drew went home with keepers and we released about 8 more snooks. We also caught jacks and lady fish. My friend Tim saw us and joined the action.It was fun and I have not fished with that many "Happy Baiters" in a long time.

Presentation is important and so is location. Spots that are legendary well known spots are usually pretty productive they don't get nicknames and reputations for nothing. If you cant get bait, don't go throwing the net 35 times, just ask somebody for a bait.

Pre-Pod action

Went podding twice today. This morning was low tide dead calm and no bait in sight.

Looked for bait agin and found some really good pre-pod action this afternoon. Pilchards were thick in the first trough north of Sunrise Blvd. Our friends the pelicans were there and there was one "Happy Baiter" casting off the beach with a box full of plugs. We did not see any lunkers or any fish feeding for that mater. The most positive sign was the bait was moving south.

I can smell them, I can feel them they are almost starting to show!

FORT LAUDERDALE - Pre-pod scouting this afternoon we found bait off the beach, and alot of it. Thought it was pod, but it ended up being pre-pod pilchard schools. Huge ones. Half-a-football field size schools of pilchard, close to the beach, and nary a pelican in sight. Typical pre-pod action. Old schoolers know which way those schools are swimming and how to stay on em. The schools were obvious from A1A and we still didn't see a single Happy Baiter. You want pilchard, you got pilchard.

Not sure where we are going to find them but Benny and I both think they are going to be somewhere between Stuart and Jupiter in the next week or so. FORT LAUDERDALE - Last night we spotted the first pre-pod of the 2009 Mullet Run. It wasn't anything major but it was a decent medium sized bait ball of medium sized silver mullet, and there was action. This is only the begining, and its a pretty good indicator that we might not be out of this heat wave before the bulk of the migration starts showing up off the beaches in the southern part of the state and that would be unusual. Happy Bait.

Prepping The Mullet Run Gear

The mullet run is gonna be here soon, and you gotta keep your gear tight if you expect to have success over the length of the season. We will be traveling and following the mullet pods down the coast so we will have (3) working nets, the nets needs some attention and now is the time to do those repairs and tweaks so you dont end baitless when the pods are in your area. It happens fast and if you aren't ready you miss it. . Once the nets are in order, we will turn our attention to the buckets and wells. That includes pumps and plumbing. The biggest struggle is always separating 5 gallon buckets that are stuck together. The rods and reels were just overhauled but I will go over them anyway, and get anything fixed that is questionable. New line and leaders and hooks. The point here is to have your gear ready so you can get bait and whack some trophy fish. Tarpon, Snook, Jacks, and Sharks. The Old Timers call it Happy Bait, I call it The Run, either way dont show up with gear that dont work, and throw your net on the baitspots, not the fishing spots.
